Great Nicobar Island Gains 13th Major Port Status
In October 2024, the Galathea Bay port in Great Nicobar Island was designated as India's 13th major port. This International Container Transshipment Port (ICTP), strategically located near the Malacca Strait, is expected to enhance India's maritime trade by reducing dependence on foreign ports like Colombo and Singapore. With a 20-metre draught for large vessels, the port could save India 0-220 million annually in transshipment fees. However, infrastructure development and environmental sustainability are critical challenges that must be addressed to realize the port's full potential as a key player in the Indo-Pacific trade route.
