Pakistan Approves Controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment
Pakistan's federal cabinet has approved the draft of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which aims to reform the judiciary by curbing the Supreme Court’s suo motu powers and changing the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s (CJP) appointment process. The amendment faces political opposition and requires a two-thirds majority in both the National Assembly and Senate, which the government lacks. Critics argue that the amendment undermines judicial independence by increasing executive control over appointments. The proposed changes will soon be discussed and voted upon in the parliament, with the outcome depending on political negotiations.
