Study Highlights Slowdown in Rising Life Expectancy Trends

A new study, led by S. Jay Olshansky and published in Nature Aging, highlights the slowdown in rising life expectancy trends. While life expectancy doubled in the 20th century, it increased by only 6.5 years between 1990 and 2019 in long-living countries like Japan and Italy. The study suggests that current medical advances, which primarily focus on treating diseases like cancer and heart disease, may be insufficient for radical life extension. To achieve significant lifespan increases, scientists need to develop treatments that specifically target the natural ageing process, as organ failure due to ageing remains a limiting factor.
