UN Calls for Action on Sea Levels

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during his visit to Tonga, highlighted the urgent need to address rising sea levels, particularly affecting low-lying nations like Tonga. Rising sea levels, driven by climate change, are increasing rapidly in the Pacific, with significant impacts like severe flooding, storm surges, and saltwater intrusion. Guterres urged global leaders, especially G20 nations responsible for 80% of global emissions, to take immediate action by reducing greenhouse gases, phasing out fossil fuels, investing in renewable energy, and adapting to climate change. He also emphasized the need for financial support to help vulnerable countries like Tonga build resilience.
