South Africa’s New Climate Change Law
South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed a new Climate Change Bill into law, requiring major fossil-fuel industries to reduce emissions and mandating local governments to create climate adaptation plans. This law aims to align South Africa with its Paris Agreement commitments. The country, heavily reliant on coal, aims to achieve a 'just transition' to sustainable jobs in various sectors and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The new policy framework supports this transition, with significant financial and implementation challenges ahead. In contrast, India lacks a comprehensive climate law, using existing environmental laws and achieving notable emission reductions and renewable energy targets.
