Japan’s Sado Gold Mines Added to UNESCO World Heritage List

On July 27, 2024, UNESCO added the Sado Gold and Silver Mines in Japan to its World Heritage List, following South Korea's withdrawal of objections. The mines, operational since the 12th century and known for traditional artisanal mining techniques, also have a contentious history of forced labor during World War II. Japan's advocacy emphasized the mines' cultural, historical, and archaeological significance. The inclusion aims to promote tourism, preserve historical heritage, and address historical injustices related to forced labor. The Sado mines, located on Sado Island, were once major gold producers and are recognized for their extensive underground tunnels and unique mining methods.
