New Deep-Water Shark Species Discovered in Kerala

Summary: Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a new species of deep-water dogfish shark named Squalus hima at the Sakthikulangara fishing harbor in Kerala. This discovery, published in the journal Records of the ZSI, adds to the understanding of the Arabian Sea's biodiversity. Led by Scientist Bineesh K. K, the team differentiated Squalus hima from similar species through extensive research. The find highlights the importance of marine conservation, especially since dogfish sharks are exploited for their meat, fins, and squalene-rich liver oil. The ZSI, established in 1916, plays a crucial role in the systematic survey and conservation of India’s fauna.
