FSSAI Warning Against Calcium Carbide For Fruit Ripening

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a warning against the use of calcium carbide for ripening fruits, emphasizing the health risks such as dizziness, vomiting, and skin sores due to its harmful components like arsenic and phosphorus. FSSAI's notice targets traders and Food Business Operators (FBOs), particularly during the mango-ripening season. The legal framework under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and subsequent regulations strictly prohibits the use of calcium carbide, advocating for the safer alternative of ethylene gas. FSSAI continues to enforce these regulations through state Food Safety Departments to protect consumer health and promote compliance with food safety laws.
