Georgia Adopts Controversial ‘Foreign Agents’ Bill
Georgia's parliament passed a controversial "foreign agents" bill on May 14, requiring news outlets, NGOs, and other groups receiving over 20% of their funding from foreign sources to register as "foreign agents." This bill has sparked significant opposition, both domestically and internationally, due to concerns about potential suppression of free speech and democracy, mirroring similar laws in Russia. Proponents argue it enhances transparency and protects national sovereignty. However, critics, including President Salome Zourabichvili and various international entities, fear it could undermine Georgia's EU membership aspirations and democratic values, leading to public protests and international scrutiny.
