Marine Heatwaves Trigger Widespread Coral Bleaching in Lakshadweep Sea
The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) reported significant coral bleaching in the Lakshadweep Sea, attributed to prolonged marine heatwaves since late October 2023. These marine heatwaves, caused by abnormal ocean temperatures, pose severe threats not only to coral reefs but also to other marine habitats like seagrass meadows. The ecological damage risks a biodiversity crisis with potential economic losses due to the disruption of crucial ecosystem services that support local livelihoods, tourism, and fisheries.
