Manipur Unrest- Background, Recent Developments & Reasons

While the northeastern state of Manipur has been restive at least since the start of 2023, a recent High Court order regarding ST status for the Meitei community has triggered widespread protests and violence.

• Geography:
  • The central valley- accounts for 10% of the state’s landmass. It is home to mainly the Meitei and Meitei Pangals.
