The merger of the National Anti-Profiteering Authority with the Competition Commission of India, while helping cut down the number of regulatory bodies, is raising concerns, especially within the CCI.
Background:
NAA:
- The National Anti-Profiteering Authority or NAA functions was set up as a price regulator under the GST regime. It was set up under Section 171 of the 2017 Central Goods and Service tax Act.
- Its main objective was to prevent companies from reaping undue benefits from the changes brought about by the GST Law. It sought to prevent unfair profiteering behaviors such as suppliers not passing on the benefits of tax rate cuts to their customers.
