What is the EWS reservation?

In 2019, the Parliament passed the 103rd Constitutional Amendment Act, enabling the government to introduce reservation quotas for the economically weaker sections that didn’t benefit from any other reservation verticals.
This 10% reservation was made available to the EWS in higher educational institutions and government jobs.
This Act inserted clauses under Articles 15 and 16, which are part of the fundamental rights.
- Note that Article 15 prohibits discrimination based on religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth.
- Article 16 of the Constitution provides for equal opportunity in public employment.
