What is the EWS reservation?
- In 2019, the Parliament passed the 103rd Constitutional Amendment Act, enabling the government to introduce reservation quotas for the economically weaker sections that didn’t benefit from any other reservation verticals.
- This 10% reservation was made available to the EWS in higher educational institutions and government jobs.
- This Act inserted clauses under Articles 15 and 16, which are part of the fundamental rights.
- Note that Article 15 prohibits discrimination based on religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth.
- Article 16 of the Constitution provides for equal opportunity in public employment.
