16th Century Copper Inscriptions Discovered in Tamil Nadu
In October 2024, two 16th-century copper plate inscriptions were discovered at Sri Singeeswarar temple in Mappedu village, Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu. Dating back to 1513 CE during the reign of King Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire, the inscriptions document a royal gift of land to Brahmins. Written in Sanskrit using the Nandinagari script, these inscriptions highlight the empire's administrative and socio-political landscape. Preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India, they provide significant insights into land grants and governance during the Vijayanagara period.
