What the scheme is about

  • The scheme was approved by the Government of India with an outlay of around ₹ 75,021 crore for implementation up to FY 2026-27.
  • Its objective is to install rooftop solar systems in one crore (10 million) households in the residential sector, enabling up to 300 free electricity units per month for each participating household.
  • It seeks to generate about 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity and reduce about 720 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions over the lifetime of the installations.
  • It also aims to build a supporting ecosystem: manufacturing, supply chain, vendor network, operation & maintenance, training of technicians and service workforce.

Subsidy & Support Features

  • Subsidy (Central Financial Assistance) levels depend on capacity: for example, for households with up to ~2 kW systems the subsidy is higher; for systems between 2-3 kW somewhat lower additional subsidy; the maximum subsidy is about ₹ 78,000 for larger systems (3 kW or so).
  • Low-interest, collateral-free loans (~7% interest) are available for residential rooftop solar up to ~3 kW capacity.
  • Households need to register on the scheme portal, apply through the local electricity distribution utility (DISCOM) and select registered vendors for installation.

Eligibility Highlights

  • Applicant must be an Indian citizen, have a valid electricity connection and a house with a roof suitable for solar installation.
  • They must not have already availed another solar rooftop subsidy for the same house.
  • The scheme covers households both in urban and rural areas (residential sector).

Skill-Building / Capacity-Building Component

  • The scheme includes a capacity-building and skilling element: to train technicians for installation, maintenance and repair of rooftop solar systems.
  • Training manuals and materials (for e.g., Rooftop Solar PV Installation & Maintenance – Trainer manual) have been developed under NSQF level 4.
  • The creation of more than three lakh skilled workers (fresh & up-skilled) is among the targets under the scheme.
