Polavaram-Banakacherla Link Project
Telangana has sought details of the Polavaram-Banakacherla link project from the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) amid concerns over its regional impact. The project aims to provide drinking water to 80 lakh people, irrigate 7.41 lakh acres of new land, and stabilise irrigation for 22.59 lakh acres. Estimated at ₹80,112 crore, it involves transferring Godavari river water for 120 days annually. Using reservoirs like the Bollapalle hill range for storage minimizes land acquisition. Historical water reliance on the Srisailam reservoir and planned diversions highlight its significance. Telangana’s request emphasizes clarity in resource sharing and potential effects on regional water security.
