Maha Kumbh – Managing River Ganga’s Cleanliness

The 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, expected to draw 450 million pilgrims over 44 days, presents significant challenges for managing the Ganga’s cleanliness. Daily sewage generation, exceeding 16.44 million litres on peak days, threatens the river's health. The Uttar Pradesh government has expanded sewage treatment infrastructure and increased water flow from Tehri Dam to mitigate pollution. Over 1.45 lakh toilets and temporary drainage systems have been installed. However, the capacity of existing Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) may be surpassed. Experts emphasize sustainable, long-term solutions for maintaining the Ganga’s water quality beyond this monumental event.
