First US Death from H5N1
In January 2025, a 65-year-old Louisiana resident became the first person in the United States to succumb to the H5N1 bird flu virus. The individual had underlying health issues and was exposed to a backyard flock and wild birds. The H5N1 virus, a subtype of influenza A, primarily affects birds but can infect humans, causing severe respiratory illness. Globally, over 950 cases with a 50% mortality rate have been reported since its identification in 1996. While the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasized low transmission risk to humans, increased surveillance and vaccine research are underway to mitigate future outbreaks.
