IIT Madras Shallow Wave Basin

IIT Madras has inaugurated Asia's largest shallow wave basin research facility at its Discovery campus in Thaiyur, near Chennai. Developed by the National Technology Centre for Ports Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC), the facility supports coastal engineering, port management, and climate impact studies. Its indigenously developed components eliminate reliance on foreign technologies. Equipped with a mobile wavemaker, it allows for multidirectional wave simulations and concurrent experiments. Applications include testing coastal structures, inland waterway projects, and large solar floating plants. This facility positions India as a global leader in marine science research and fosters international collaborations in coastal and offshore engineering.
