Helmeted Water Toad (Calyptocephallela gayi)

The Helmeted Water Toad (Calyptocephallela gayi), a living fossil from Chile, faces significant threats due to climate change, habitat destruction, and pollution. Measuring over 30 cm and weighing up to 1 kg, it is one of the largest frogs globally. Its population has declined by over 30% since 1990, earning it a “vulnerable” status from the IUCN. Found in freshwater habitats from Coquimbo to Chiloe Island, its survival is endangered by urbanization and illegal pollution. Conservation efforts by groups like Proyecto Anfibia focus on habitat restoration and raising awareness to safeguard this ancient species critical to its ecosystem.
