Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) Telescope
The Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) telescope, inaugurated on October 4, 2024, in Hanle, Ladakh, is the world's highest imaging Cherenkov telescope. Located 4.3 km above sea level with a 21-meter-wide dish, it detects Cherenkov radiation, produced by gamma rays interacting with the atmosphere. These high-energy electromagnetic waves originate from cosmic phenomena like pulsars and black holes. MACE's advanced technology aids in exploring high-energy cosmic events, marking a milestone in astrophysical research and reinforcing India’s contributions to space science.
