Tamil Nadu Tackles Invasive Plant Threat

Tamil Nadu’s Forest Department is combating the invasive Senna tora plant in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR). Native to Central America, this plant threatens grasslands crucial for species like elephants and Indian gaur. Other invasive species, such as Senna spectabilis and Lantana camara, compound the ecological challenge. Efforts include mechanized removal in a 15-hectare area and community collaboration to track spread patterns. Though the threat is currently limited, ongoing monitoring and innovative strategies are essential to preserving MTR’s biodiversity.
