Thadou Tribe Rejects Kuki Label in 2024 Convention
At the 2024 Thadou Convention in Guwahati, the Thadou tribe of Manipur formally rejected being classified under the Kuki label, emphasizing their distinct language, culture, and identity. Historically recorded as a separate tribe since 1881, they called for the removal of the “Any Kuki Tribe” designation from Manipur’s Scheduled Tribe list. The convention highlighted the Thadou community’s challenges in the wake of recent violence in Manipur and expressed solidarity with their kin in Myanmar amid political turmoil. The Thadou reasserted their commitment to their unique heritage, advocating for independent recognition and denouncing misrepresentations of their identity.
