Sixth Ocean Hidden in Mantle
Scientists from Northwestern University have discovered a vast water reservoir 700 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface, potentially three times larger than all surface oceans combined. This water is stored in a mineral called ringwoodite, which traps water within its crystal structure. The finding, based on seismic analysis of over 500 earthquakes, challenges traditional views on the origins of Earth’s water and suggests that Earth’s oceans may have originated from internal sources. Future research will explore whether this hidden ocean is a global phenomenon, reshaping our understanding of Earth's water cycle and geology.
