COTPA, 2003 – Recent Updates
In response to rising tobacco use among youth, India's Ministries of Education and Health have issued guidelines under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, to make educational institutions tobacco-free. The Tobacco-Free Educational Institution (ToFEI) manual aims to raise awareness, provide quitting resources, and enforce laws prohibiting tobacco use near schools. The initiative follows alarming data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey, showing 8.5% of students aged 13-15 use tobacco. Collaborative efforts between ministries aim to create a healthier environment and reduce youth addiction risks by implementing stricter guidelines and awareness programs.
