New COVID Variant XEC
The new COVID-19 variant, XEC, discovered in August 2024 in Germany, is spreading rapidly and has reached 27 countries. It’s a recombinant variant formed from KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 strains, featuring mutations that may increase transmission. While no evidence currently indicates more severe illness, symptoms are similar to earlier variants. The UK plans to introduce a booster vaccine targeting the JN.1 variant, related to XEC, in October. Continued monitoring, vaccination, and genomic surveillance are crucial to managing XEC's spread and potential impact, ensuring readiness for any emerging variants.
