Supermassive Black Hole Jets

Astronomers have recently discovered massive energy jets, called Porphyrion, from a supermassive black hole located 7.5 billion light-years away, making it the largest ever recorded. These jets extend 23 million light-years and consist of high-energy particles moving nearly at light speed. They release energy comparable to trillions of stars and impact cosmic structures, influencing star formation, galaxy clusters, and magnetic fields. By studying these jets, scientists aim to understand how supermassive black holes shape the universe. However, these jets can also disrupt the formation of new stars and alter interstellar gas and magnetic fields.
