West Bengal’s ‘Aparajita’ Anti-Rape Bill

The West Bengal Assembly passed the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (2024) to strengthen protections for women and children. The law introduces life imprisonment without parole for rape convicts, the death penalty in severe cases, stricter amendments to the POCSO Act, and faster legal procedures, with trials completed in 30 days. It also allocates ₹120 crores for the safety of medical personnel and toughens penalties for acid attacks. Prompted by public outrage over a brutal crime, the bill aims to reduce sexual violence, ensure swift justice, and improve security for vulnerable groups, with broad political support.
