Discovery of Arnoux’s Beaked Whales
Researchers recently spotted Arnoux’s beaked whales off the coast of Antarctica during a 2022 survey in the Weddell Sea. These elusive whales, known for their deep-diving abilities, hadn’t been officially seen for decades. The discovery suggests they might live in Antarctic waters year-round, potentially being more numerous than previously believed. With whales being hard to detect due to their deep dives, this sighting encourages further research to better understand their behavior and population.
