Africa Mpox Outbreak
Africa is experiencing a significant outbreak of mpox, driven by a new variant called clade 1b, which poses a particular risk to children. The World Health Organization (WHO) has convened an emergency meeting to assess whether this situation should be declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The outbreak has spread across 15 African countries, including several with no previous cases, leading to a sharp increase in infections and deaths. The WHO is considering enhanced global cooperation and resource mobilization to address this crisis, amidst challenges like cross-border transmission and limited detection capabilities.
