Two Flower Fly Species Reported from Kerala for the First Time
Researchers from the Shadpada Entomology Research Lab (SERL) at Christ College in Irinjalakuda have reported two flower fly species, Mesembrius bengalensis and Mesembrius quadrivittatus, from the Kole wetlands and Vilagan Kunnu hillocks in Thrissur district, Kerala, for the first time. Announced in July 2024 and published in the ENTOMON journal, this discovery highlights the ecological significance of flower flies, which play key roles in pollination, biological control, and mimicking bees and wasps to deter predators. The research adds to Kerala's faunal list and enhances regional biological understanding. Ongoing efforts will focus on long-term monitoring, habitat protection, securing funding, and engaging the public in conservation.
