New Algal Species Discovered
Phycologists from Catholicate College discovered a new algal species, Oedocladium sahyadricum, in Kerala’s Western Ghats. This region, known for its rich biodiversity, provides unique conditions for diverse microalgae. The algae, dioecious and terrestrial, exhibit advanced reproductive structures and thrive in wet soil, changing color with age. The Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site, significantly influence India's monsoon and host numerous endemic species.
