Some 13 people died due to heatstroke in Maharashtra at an open air event, at a time when the region wasn’t even experiencing heatwave. This brings the focus on heatstroke- an easily preventable issue that continues to claim lives every summer.

How do heatstroke deaths happen?

  • Heatstroke is a serious condition caused when the internal temperature of the body rises to dangerous levels. This can sometimes lead to hospitalization and even deaths. This happens due to a number of reasons:
    • High temperatures- especially in summers
    • Wet bulb temperature- which is the combined effect of high temperature and high humidity that hampers the evaporation of sweat, thus impeding the body’s ability to cool itself down
