Sodium Intake- WHO Report Highlights

From Current Affairs Notes for UPSC » Editorials & In-depths » This topic

In March this year, the World Health Organization released a report on the global trends in sodium intake. The findings highlight the countries’ failure in reigning in their population’s salt intake within safe levels, leaving them far behind on their efforts to cut down sodium intake by 30% by 2025.

Salt in Diet:

  • Salt is an essential component of diet. It is necessary for several physiological functions:
  • Regulating Fluid Balance: Salt helps to balance the amount of fluid inside and outside cells, ensuring that cells have the necessary amount of water to function properly.
  • Nerve and Muscle Function: Sodium ions are crucial for the transmission of electrical impulses in the nervous system, which allows for proper muscle function.
