Living Wills- On the Recent SC Guidelines

Recently, a 5-Judge Bench of the Supreme Court altered the guidelines for ‘living wills’ to ease up the procedure for passive euthanasia.

What are Living Wills?

  • Euthanasia refers to the deliberate ending of one's life, often to relieve suffering from an incurable condition.
  • It can be either
    • Active- administered by a physician using means like lethal injections
    • Passive- by withdrawing life support/ treatment necessary to keep a terminally ill person alive
