Recently, the Union Cabinet approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a ₹19,744 crore allocation, in pursuit of developing India into a ‘global hub’ for green hydrogen.
What is green hydrogen?
- Hydrogen is an important industrial fuel with a wide range of applications. Examples include production of ammonia (vital for the fertilizer sector), steel, in refineries and in electricity generation.
- Based on the source from which it is produced, hydrogen can be of different types, such as:
- Black/ brown hydrogen- from coal
- Grey hydrogen- from natural gas
- Blue hydrogen- from fossil fuel sources but the carbon emission is addressed using carbon-capture technologies, etc.
