The ECI is set to pilot the RVMs to enable remote voting by the domestic migrants. On January 16th, the prototype is to be demonstrated to the political parties who are to given their suggestions by the end of the month.
Background:
- On the subject of voting opportunities for internal migrants, the Supreme Court, in 2015, directed the Election Commission to look into remote voting options.
- The ECI set up a committee to explore options like:
- Proxy voting
- Postal ballots
- Internet voting
- Early voting, etc.
- However, the committee didn’t recommend any of these options due to different reasons.
- Now, the election watchdog has come up with a new solution- RVMs.
