In a first, 3 Constitutional Bench proceedings in the apex court were simultaneously live-streamed. This comes after the recent decision on live-streaming taken in a full court under CJI U U Lalit.

Background:

  • The Indian legal system is founded on the open courts concept i.e. the court proceedings are open to the public. However, the reality is different as only a few people are allowed (and can be physically present) in a courtroom.
  • As technology has advanced, the court rooms could now address this issue. The courts are already employing digitization- maintaining online record of cases, allowing online filing of FIRs, automating case rotation system, etc.
