Annie Besant – Important Personalities of Modern India

Annie Besant was born in London, England. She was a proponent of free thought, radicalism, Fabianism (socialism), theosophy, women's rights, and Irish and Indian self-rule. Besant joined the National Secular Society and the Fabian Society in the 1870s, organisations that fought for the freedom of thought and an end to the Catholic Church's oppression in England. In 1893, Besant made her first trip to India. She later lived there and was active in the Indian independence movement. In 1916, she established the Indian Home Rule League, which she later led as president. She had a significant role in the Indian National Congress as well.
