Dolphin conservation in India faces challenges as the National Dolphin Research Centre (NDRC) in Patna, inaugurated in March 2024, remains inactive due to resource and staffing issues. The NDRC aims to protect the endangered Gangetic river dolphin, India’s national aquatic animal, which faces habitat loss due to environmental and human factors. Despite promises to operationalize the centre, delays impede critical research and conservation efforts. Moving forward, addressing these gaps and fostering collaboration are crucial to ensuring the survival of this unique species.

The Sustainable Trade Index 2024, created by the Hinrich Foundation and IMD, assesses global economies on their trade sustainability. It evaluates countries based on economic growth, societal progress, and environmental resilience. New Zealand leads for the third consecutive year, while India ranks 23rd. The index highlights the importance of balancing economic activity with social and environmental responsibility, fostering resilience in industries, and encouraging green economies amidst global challenges like climate change and geopolitical tensions.

The Global Soil Conference 2024, held in New Delhi, focused on soil health and its importance in food security and climate mitigation. Organized by the Indian Society of Soil Science (ISSS), the event highlighted the need for sustainable farming practices and strategic investments. Experts like Prof. Ramesh Chand and Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra advocated integrating traditional and modern methods. Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stressed public awareness and innovative solutions. Organizations like ICAR support these efforts. The conference emphasized collaborative strategies to tackle soil degradation and promote environmental sustainability.

Curtin University’s Binar CubeSats (Binar-2, 3, and 4) burned up prematurely in Earth’s atmosphere due to heightened solar activity in Solar Cycle 25, which increased atmospheric drag in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Unlike Binar-1, which lasted nearly a year, these satellites were operational for only two months. Lacking thrusters to counteract drag, university satellites like Binar are particularly vulnerable during high solar activity. The Binar Space Program is now planning launches during quieter solar conditions anticipated after 2026. This event highlights challenges posed by solar cycles on space missions, particularly for LEO satellites.

Sanyukt Vimochan 2024, held in Gujarat, showcased India’s disaster response capabilities through tabletop exercises and multi-agency demonstrations. The event, aligned with Atmanirbhar Bharat, featured indigenous disaster management technologies. International participants, including the Gulf Cooperation Council, contributed to the exchange of expertise. Key activities included cyclone simulations, rescue operations, and rehabilitation strategies. General Upendra Dwivedi emphasized the critical role of the Indian Armed Forces and the global relevance of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. The exercise reinforced India’s commitment to effective disaster preparedness and international collaboration.
