New Ant Species Discovered in Western Ghats

Scientists have discovered a new ant species, Tapinoma onaele, in the leaf litter of the Western Ghats in Kodagu, Karnataka. The species’ name, meaning “dried leaves” in Kannada, highlights the ecological importance of leaf litter habitats, which support biodiversity and forest health. Pronoy Baidya of AERO also rediscovered rare ant species, including Probolomyrmex procne, in Goa. The study stresses the value of conserving leaf litter ecosystems, often destroyed by burning, for maintaining ecological balance and protecting species.
